Tobago Mirror

Situated in the 212 Gallery Eco garden, inspired by the sea life in the Caribbean Island of Tobago, this mirror reflects the colours and fish shoals of the Island.

When I heard that the 212 Gallery on the Gloucester Road was creating a Tobago themed garden with wonderfully rich colours and beautifully painted murals, I was so inspired I wanted to be a part of it.

Having spent considerable time in Tobago, the gallery director Sarah was determined to bring a little of the colour and wildlife of the Island back to Bristol. Having visited Tobago, I easily understood what she loved about it and so engaged in creating a piece for the garden.

Happily the garden has an Eco policy so I set about visiting charity shops and collecting old china and glass, considering the textures and colours to match the treasures of the Tobago sea life.

Both of us love mirrors so I created a circular frame design that incorporated the lovely colourful sea creatures, and my memories of diving in shoals of fish inspired the mirrored centre.

I had fun remembering particular moments from my own diving experiences in Tobago and Indonesia such as the squid swimming by watching me watching them along with the tiny turtles and the colourful corals and fish.

The garden is a lovely place to soak up the summer sun and I hope to run a few workshops there in the future.
